How long can a puppy hold it?
A common rule of thumb: a puppy can hold it for about as many hours as their age in months, plus one. A 2-month-old puppy might last about 3 hours, and a 4-month-old about 5. That's the most they can manage, not a goal. Go out sooner when you can.
Always go out right after:
- Waking up (in the morning and after every nap)
- Eating or drinking
- Playing or getting excited
- Coming out of the crate
- Right before bed
A sample day for a young puppy

Make it easy to succeed
- Use the same spot and the same word, like "go potty," every time.
- Reward right away, within a couple of seconds, with a treat and praise.
- Supervise indoors, or keep your puppy in a crate or small area when you can't watch.
- Watch for signs like sniffing, circling or wandering off.
When accidents happen
Don't scold. Calmly take your puppy outside, then clean the spot with an enzyme cleaner so the smell doesn't draw them back. Most accidents mean the gap between breaks was too long. Keeping a simple potty log for a week shows you your puppy's pattern fast.

How long does it take to potty train a puppy?
Many puppies are mostly reliable in a few weeks to a few months. Consistency matters more than anything else.
Should I use puppy pads?
They can help in apartments or for very young puppies, but they can make outdoor training take longer. If you use them, move them toward the door over time.
Why does my puppy pee right after coming inside?
Usually they got distracted outside. Stay out a few extra minutes, stay boring, and reward the moment they go.
