How this estimate works
Vets often start with a pet's resting energy requirement (the calories needed at rest), which is 70 × (weight in kg)0.75. That number is then multiplied by a factor for life stage and activity: growing puppies need much more, while less active and senior pets need less.
Turning calories into cups
Every food is different. Look for "kcal/cup" on the bag and enter it above. A food with 450 kcal per cup means smaller portions than one with 330.
Keep an eye on body condition
- You should be able to feel (not see) your pet's ribs.
- From above, there should be a visible waist.
- Weigh your pet every few weeks and adjust portions by about 10% at a time.
Treats count too: keep them under about 10% of daily calories.
